Penn Square in Reading PA during the Christmas season in the 1940s. In the distance is Pomeroy’s department store. A lighted Christmas tree sat in the very center of the traffic circle in the middle of the square. Lighting and decor were quite the spectacle for shoppers that were finding gifts for their family and friends for the holiday.
I just found a business card from Moyers Book Mart, 22-28 N 6th Street, in my copy of Hegel’s Phenomenology…
I remember waiting in the middle of Penn Street for a bus in the early 1950’s. And how beautiful Penn Street looked at Christmas.
Beautiful view. The picture has to be no earlier than 1948, as the car looks to be a ’49 -‘ 51 Plymouth. Must have been pretty late at night, with only a single car in view.
